Radical Reinforcements

Okay, they aren’t really radical, but there are other things you can do for your skin. Radio frequency, ultrasound, infrared, and lasers might tighten skin modestly by targeting the fibrous bands that attach skin to muscle, and some skin firming and tightening creams seem to work. Scientists are still seeking the Holy Grail that helps rebuild the protein in skin that governs elasticity. But at least they are still looking.

Collagen and protein supplements come in various forms, including pills, powders, and creams. They’ve worked for me, but your mileage may vary.

And then there are anti-aging products. Two main types are antioxidants and cell regulators. Antioxidants are rich in vitamins C, B, and E, and work more to prevent wrinkles than reverse damage, although they may reduce redness and inflammation, which will make skin healthier.

Cell regulator creams and lotions contain peptides, retinols, tretinoin, or growth factor ingredients to stimulate collagen production that helps firm neck and face skin.

You can also try laser peels as well as ultrasound and microneedling, which stimulate protein production in deeper layers to make skin firmer. If you’re really serious (or desperate, conditions that may overlap) there are always injectables (botulinum toxin, various fillers to help minimize wrinkles, and more)—or the big plunge of getting a facelift.

As for the baths, moisture massaging, and other skin care, so what if you feel great doing it? Perhaps that sort of self-care is one of the benefits of aging.

Read the Label!

Even if it means carrying a pair of readers or even a magnifying glass with you, it’s worth reading labels. Some manufacturers craftily label moisturizers that contain sunscreen (and no other active ingredients) as “anti-aging.” It’s not really deceptive—as we’ve covered, wearing sun protection is one of the best ways to keep skin in good shape. But compared to creams including more advanced — and, usually, more expensive — ingredients, that bargain moisturizer might not be what you hoped.
